Donald “Don” James Rose
February 20, 1932 – December 7, 2024
Donald “Don” James Rose, 92, passed away on December 7, 2024, after a life rich in
adventure, humor, and creativity. Born on February 20, 1932, in Meadsted, Saskatchewan, Don
was the second of seven children raised near Green Lake by James “Jim” Rose and Louella
(Larson). He grew up alongside his siblings Mary Block(Henry), Mickey Tolman(Keith), Helen,
William “Bill,”(Cheryl), Monte, and Shirley (1931-1933), forging a lifelong love for the outdoors
during their rugged childhood.
Don served in Korea with the Royal Canadian Dragoons from 1950 to 1953, where his sharp wit
and knack for finding humor in chaos were legendary. After returning to Canada, he began a
long career as a Park Warden, patrolling the wilds of Jasper, Waterton, Riding Mountain,
Georgian Bay Islands, and Wood Buffalo National Parks. His years in the wilderness inspired
many poems and stories that captured his love of nature and unique perspective on life.
Don was a devoted father to Kelly and Mark (Kari) and a beloved grandfather to Michaela,
Tristan, Liam, and Owen, often delighting in mischief with his “hoodlums.” In retirement, he
embraced storytelling, crafting whimsical tales and reflective poetry, some of which were
published in wildlife magazines.
Don was predeceased by his parents and siblings except his sister Mickey, who resides in Hill
Spring, Alberta.
Per Don’s wishes, there will be no service. He asked that his loved ones remember him over a
slice of pie, a cup of coffee, or a pinch of snuff, sharing tales of his misadventures. Don lived
boldly, laughed often, and left behind a legacy of humor, resilience, and unforgettable stories.
